3 September 2020Addiction and the 2SLGBTQ+ Community
Members of the 2SLGBTQ community are at increased risk of addiction due to the stigmas against 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, childhood trauma, lack of support and isolation. Rates of addiction within the 2SLGBTQ+ community are up to 3 times higher than the general population. This indicates the need for increased awareness of the specific risks of addiction in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, as well as increased support for these individuals.
Be Proud of Your Recovery
Pride Week 2017 is a time to celebrate how far the 2SLGBTQ+ community has come thus far. Due to the societal stigmas placed upon members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community which lead to the higher than average rates of drug and alcohol addiction, this celebration should include your own recovery from addiction. Take the time this week to remember how far you have come and the journey you have taken to achieve sobriety. Celebrating Pride Week while remaining sober, you serve as an excellent example of the resilience of the 2SLGBTQ+ community!
There are many parties and opportunities for substance abuse during Pride Week, making your recovery an even more prominent topic. Calling upon the supports you have gained through your recovery process, and avoiding situations which may trigger a relapse will be important throughout Pride Week.
Raising Awareness and Support
We must take advantage of this opportunity to raise awareness of the overwhelming rates of addiction in the 2SLGBTQ+ community and provide support to those who need it. Searidge Foundation welcomes all community members, and hopes to support those struggling with addiction. At Searidge Drug Rehab, each client’s treatment plan is tailored to meet their own individual needs, ensuring their holistic recovery. Halifax’s Pride Festival is an excellent opportunity to share your stories of recovery, encouraging fellow members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community to seek help for their addiction.
