Healing with Nature's Beauty

Searidge Drug Rehab is located in the famously picturesque Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia overlooking the Annapolis Basin and just minutes from the seacoast. Throughout the year the lush scenery reflects the healing cycle of nature’s seasons in all their beauty. It is indeed a place of wonder and healing from drug addiction and can bring peace and serenity to recovery from drug addiction, and to all willing to take a moment to soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Making big progress by staying small

One of the major benefits of limiting our enrolment is having the space for flexibility and individuality a larger institution can never accommodate. While our addiction treatment program is primarily focused on evidence-based psychotherapy, we are open and able to integrate into this whichever alternative therapies appeal to each resident. Our goal is to provide each of our residents with precisely the right combination of Psychological, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Nutritional, Alternative and Spiritual practices that will bring each of them their recovery. We pride ourselves in our ability to work with each resident closely, and offer him or her the care, support and treatment they need with compassion and dignity.

Our priority is to offer individual support and attention to residents in a welcoming and comfortable environment in which they are not overwhelmed by a large crowd of people. This allows residents to engage with therapy more easily and get to know us and each other better. In a larger centre, a group therapy session can mean 25 or 30 people listening to a speaker, which essentially makes you a member of an audience. At Searidge a group session is much more of an interactive discussion. This enables residents to better express themselves and have their concerns and opinions be heard. A more open and deeper engagement with group therapy results.

A primary factor in the high success of Searidge Drug Rehab comes from the fact that we limit ourselves to a capacity of 12 residents. Keeping our programs small and private prevents an institutional mindset from taking hold and offers a more relaxed and welcoming environment.

Effective and evidence based

At Searidge our psychotherapy program is first and foremost targeted to treat addictive behaviour. Simultaneous with this process, psychotherapy is also used to identify and treat the underlying emotional and psychological issues that can contribute to addiction.

Over 65% of individuals with substance abuse disorder are also self-medicating for depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, grief, or some other psychological or psychiatric ailment. Our program at Searidge is designed to provide treatment both for addictive behaviour and such concurrent disorders. Our psychotherapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy, rational emotive behavioural therapy (REBT), psychodynamic therapy, and cognitive bias modification therapy, all proven and effective treatments for drug addiction and for the underlying emotional and psychological issues involved with drug addiction.

Alternative therapies

As important as evidence-based psychotherapy is for our addiction treatment program, it can’t be the only activity at Searidge Foundation. We schedule a wide variety of alternative therapies that help reinforce the more clinical drug rehab treatments and keep each day spent with us interesting and rewarding. This program includes Yoga, meditation, mindfulness meditation, acupuncture, Tai Chi, relaxation therapy, creative art therapy and Native healing rituals. These activities help renew the body, the mind, and the soul. And while these practices cannot cure you of a drug addiction, they can empower you with a healthy and entirely individual strength and spirit that will help you cope with life’s daily stresses and anxieties in a helpful constructive manner, rather than self medicating with drugs or alcohol.

Nutritional therapy

Since recovery requires a healthy body and mind, Searidge Drug Rehab is committed to proper nutrition.

Our food is nutritious because it is locally sourced from neighbouring farms in Annapolis Valley. Our cooks have an eclectic style and can cook various international and local cuisines. Whether you are a meat lover, a vegetarian or have religious or dietary restrictions we can accommodate your needs.

Professor Louise Thibault, our dietician from McGill University, helps design a variety of wholesome and nourishing meal plans. A practitioner of orthomolecular medicine, she can prescribe a nutritional regimen right for you to help stave off cravings and restore neurological health which facilitates addiction recovery.

Drug rehab that attends to concurrent disorders

Each customised drug addiction treatment program is guided by an individual treatment plan that addresses co-occurring psychological or psychiatric disorders. Most common mental health issues such as ADD/ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), anxiety disorders, and depression are often the cause of self-medication that leads to drug addiction and alcoholism. It would not make sense to treat only the addictive behaviour without addressing the psychological problems causing the drug addiction.

Pharmacotherapy treatments

Even though our primary choice is to end the struggle of drug addiction through abstinence, we realize that for some this may not be possible. What makes Searidge Drug Rehab stand out from all other drug rehabs is that we understand there are some that may need further guidance with anti drug addiction medication. We work with caring physicians, psychiatrists and nurses that will give you compassionate care in a non-judgemental environment. Therefore, we are open and willing to work with you based on your individual needs and where appropriate, work with anti-addiction medications to assist you in controlling cravings that help prevent relapse. Pharmacotherapy treatments can help make things a little easier by taking the focus away from your drug addiction towards your counselling and alternative therapies so that you get better, faster.

Our medical team of addiction professionals are experienced and qualified with the use of anti-drug addiction medication. Our physicians are licensed to prescribe naltrexone methadone, suboxone, and a variety of other anti-addiction medications that have been proven effective in helping to control cravings and prevent relapse. Our clinical team recognize the benefits of pharmacotherapy and want you to get the most out of your individual and group sessions. We are proud members of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP), a US based association and we adhere to the high standards embodied by the NAATP. We are also proud members of the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counsellors (NAADAC), the largest association of addiction focused professionals in the US and Canada.

Recreational therapy

Finding new and healthy ways to deal with stress and relax is an important part of drug addiction recovery and we offer a rich recreational program accessible to each resident’s different physical abilities and interests. Our recreation director, a certified personal trainer, organises various seasonal outdoor activities and fitness programs that will heal the body as well as the mind and spirit. Recreational therapy helps getting you back into your past interests, activities and hobbies that was lost during drug addiction.

We also have a heated swimming pool so you can enjoy the outdoors and the benefits of aqua fitness that extends the summer months. Our activities will also organise crafting workshops, computer skills training, and much more so you can get back or reignite that creative spark that was put on hold all during drug addiction. The grounds of Searidge Drug Rehab feature a large outside space full of green pastures and a stone’s throw of the ocean that will help you enjoy nature’s beauty that is conducive to rest, relaxation and recovery.

A commitment to privacy

We believe that privacy is paramount to successful addiction recovery. Searidge Drug Rehab provides each resident their own private room with full bathroom that give the peace and privacy you need.

We understand it’s important to have your own room to go back to after a long day of therapy and activities. This gives you the opportunity to relax, journal or reflect in peace. But most importantly you can have an undisturbed and restful sleep.

Detox services

The first step in addiction recovery is detox. The physical symptoms and withdrawal period varies depending on the drug abused, the length and the severity of drug addiction. Detoxing is not only about ridding the body of these “toxins” but also re-setting the neuro-chemistry of the brain that has been altered due to drug abuse. At Searidge Drug Rehab and Detox Centre, we work closely with our team of addiction treatment professionals to provide you with compassionate care by customising a detox program that works best for you.

Withdrawal is medically supervised and supported by our on-site nurses. For certain cases, we make use of medical aids to render the process much easier and safer. For opiate withdrawals we use suboxone, and for Benzodiazepine withdrawal we follow a modified version of the Ashton protocol. Alcohol withdrawal is medically supervised and medication is given to eliminate the risk of seizure and stroke. We take every measure to ensure that this first, important stage towards drug addiction recovery is a comfortable and safe one. To find out more about the detox program at Searidge please call.

Treatment durations

For successful drug addiction recovery, Searidge Drug Rehab Centre helps you explore and identify the root causes of your drug addiction. We teach new and healthy coping strategies and give you tools to successfully live with the demands and responsibilities of a drug-free daily life. It is best advised to leave your environment temporarily because you need to focus 100% on addiction recovery without temptations and distractions. To meet the diverse needs of our residents, we offer drug addiction programs for 30, 60, or 90 days. This is the time and place where you need to focus on the most important person: YOU.

The importance of aftercare

Completing a residential drug rehab program can be rewarding and healing, but without effective aftercare in place returning home presents the risk of falling into old habits. Aftercare provides the security and support needed to renew and reinforce the tools and techniques implemented at Searidge Drug Rehab. While the journey into the real world can be overwhelming; addiction recovery is a lifestyle change and commitment that simply does not end a month’s time or so away at a residential drug rehab.

Engaging with Searidge's extensive aftercare program works efficiently with your daily responsibilities and individual and therapeutic needs and offers proven and crucial support for maintaining sobriety. Our Aftercare program offers group therapy sessions over the phone from the comfort and convenience of your own home. No need to sacrifice an entire evening driving to some location when you can pick up the phone and be connected to a welcoming group therapy session of 5 to 6 others talking with a counsellor, all of whom you may already know through your time at Searidge. You can also get individual counselling over the phone, or communicate with our Aftercare community through our private in-house social network site. Our Twitter and message services send out inspirational funny and engaging tweets and messages several times a day to our Aftercare community. We also offer refresher weekend getaways to alumni who want to reconnect more intensively. We also run a Smart Recovery Aftercare program and are part of the Smart Recovery community that offers virtual Internet meetings across Canada, the USA, England, and Australia. The wide array of Aftercare services including more intensive Sober living facilities are reviewed with each resident as part of their "Exit Plan" which assures them of our ongoing support as they return to successfully stand up to the challenges of their daily lives.

Dedicated to the environment & humanitarian efforts

Living in Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia has drawn us to appreciate Mother Nature. Being surrounded by the beauty and calming effects of the ocean and lush green acreage, we want to respect and do everything we can to preserve it.

In order to have the least impact we practice the following

  • Red Worm Composting. Not only does this dramatically reduce our waste, but it provides us with rich compost for the gardens on our grounds.
  • Zero Carbon-Offsetting. This reduces our overall impact on the planet.
  • Sustainable Local Food. Eating fresh locally grown foods supports the community, the environment and your health.
  • Natural Cleaning Products. This protects the ecosystems in the ocean, the Annapolis River and the surrounding land.

We also donate money to Kiva, a micro-finance operation aimed at helping entrepreneurs in third world countries get their small businesses started.

Participates in and supports addiction research

We stand on current scientific addiction research. Searidge Foundation and our sister drug rehab centre Sobriety Home located in Godmanchester, Quebec are regarded as the leading alcohol and drug rehab facility in Canada.

We support the following institutions that are leading the way for addiction research medicine

  • Florida State University (FSU)-treatments for addiction and anxiety disorder.
  • McGill University, Montreal Quebec-Dr. Brunet’s cutting edge scientific research on PTSD and addiction memory.
